Song of the Week 2/1/2015

Natalie Prass lived in Nashville for 9 years. Tired of struggling in the abyss that can be the music scene there, she recently moved to Richmond, VA. Presumably, to be closer to her label, Spacebomb Records. I know the feeling.

Back in 2012, she recorded an album with Spacebomb founder and old friend and bandmate, Matthew E. White, and his collective of arrangers and musicians.

The result is an album steeped in the sounds of classic recordings by Ray Charles, The Band, or Al Green, with wonderfully rich horn and string arrangements buoying each songs fragility.

Her unique voice carries the emotion of a young Dolly Parton, with hints of EmmyLou Harris, Kate Bush, Janet Jackson, and even a little Disney princess.

I suppose because Matthew’s amazing debut record, Big Inner, was taking off at the time, her record was postponed for a year, and then another year.

Well, it finally came out last week and it appears to have been worth the wait.

This week NPR released a video for the standout track “Why Don’t You Believe In Me?

It’s just her in front of the camera, painting her face with what appears to be green makeup, allowing the green screen effect to show another image of her singing through her obscured face. A relatively simple concept, but quite moving. A visual metaphor for the “self doubt” reflected in her lyrics. Apparently, she has two more albums of material ready to go. Let’s hope it doesn’t take another 3 years.
